While scanning contemporary Australian newspapers, Selma (Elizabeth Alexander) notices that the winners of certain horse races were not the same winners recorded in history in 2193. She and future cop Darien Lambert (Dale Midkiff) investigate.

In Australia, Selma finds five recent winners that should not have won. All five horses were owned by the Burning Tree Stable and all were trained by Kate Vickers (Nikki Coghill).

As Darien investigates the Burning Tree Stable, he examines a sixth winning horse, trained by Kate, and learns that it has a very slow heartbeat. Kate Vickers enters the stable to see what he's doing. Darien produces some phony identification (courtesy of Selma) and fools Kate. Kate takes the winning horse out for a run around the track, but the horse dies suddenly of a heart attack.

Darien investigates Rufio Jans (Mark Hembrow), one of the owners of the Burning Tree Stable. Evidence reveals that Rufio is a fugitive from 2193 who was indicted for killing an athlete with a dangerous laser device, the "Lectr" laser, used to increase athletic performance. Rufio vanished before he was brought to trial, time traveling back 200 years. Now he's using the same laser device on horses to illegally win races. Darien finally understands how average horses are beating famous champions.

Darien's investigation focuses, momentarily, on Kate Vickers. But soon, he is certain that she is not involved in the race fixing and is not a fugitive from the future. Later, at the stable, he discovers the bodies of all five of the laser-induced winning horses, buried in a field. Kate thought they had been taken away to breed with other winners.

Kate tells Rufio's partner, Randall Quinn (Bryan Marshall), that the horse Rufio and Quinn have scheduled for the next race shouldn't run due to an injury. But Quinn, who is also from the future and the inventor of the "Lectr" laser, is confident that his evil futuristic technology will enable the horse to win. Quinn makes a bet with Kate that if the horse wins, she must work for him for free for six months, but if the horse loses, Kate can have the horse.

Darien gets to the track in time to stop Rufio from shooting the horse with the laser. But Quinn ambushes them both, killing Rufio with the "Lectr". But before Quinn can attack Darien, Darien sends him back to 2193. Although he was not a criminal when he left the future, he is now and Selma will transmit this information. The race proceeds without use of the "Lectr" laser. Kate's horse places second, but she wins the bet and the horse.
