Little Boy Lost In 1993, future cop Darien Lambert (Dale Midkiff) sees his former teacher, George Castas (George Henare), on the TV news. Castas taught Darien at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in the 22nd century. Castas is on TV because his 12 year old, adopted, deaf son, Robbie (Borhan Borhani), is lost in the wilderness. At the time this happened, Castas was teaching Robbie tracking and survival techniques. While Robbie was out wandering alone, Castas suffered a heart attack. Darien is saddened to discover that Castas became an art forger later in his life and is now a fugitive who escaped to the 20th century. However, Darien feels some loyalty toward his old teacher, so he joins the search for Robbie. First, he visits Castas in the hospital and learns that Castas has heart disease. Fortunately for Darien, Robbie has Castas' micro-computer with him. The computer sends an advanced emergency signal that only Darien's futuristic computer, Selma (Elizabeth Alexander), understands. The search and rescue efforts of the local police are halted due to a storm. The sheriff forbids Darien to fly a helicopter in the hazardous weather, but Darien disobeys, hoping to find Robbie with Selma's help. Robbie fell down into an old mine shaft and cannot be seen from the helicopter. However, Selma knows exactly where Robbie is. Because of the rough weather, Darien breaks a leg landing the helicopter near the mine shaft. Still, he crawls to the shaft. Somehow, Darien must get the attention of the unconscious deaf boy who fell so far down that Darien can't reach him. Darien tosses Selma into the hole. She gives Robbie a mild electrical shock to awaken him. Selma's holographic projection has been programmed for Darien's use only. Yet Darien is able to command Selma to appear before Robbie in the "visual mode." Using sign language, Selma gives Robbie the necessary instructions to help Darien get Robbie out of the shaft. Darien pulls Robbie out with the helicopter's cable. After taking Robbie home, Darien confronts Castas. Castas tells Darien he is dying. He will leave no more than five years if he stays in the 1990s. Castas knows that he could live another 50 years with the medical technology of the 22nd century. However, he would have to spend half of that time in prison. Castas decides to stay with his wife and adopted son and Darien lets him. |
